The Deep Space Diary is a free primary programme that combines STEM learning with a breadth of subjects for KS2/P5-7. Students create their own book as they adventure through Deep Space with the James Webb Space Telescope and a team of awesome space and engineering experts. By completing 60+ hours of curriculum-linked, creative activities, students learn about the history of space observation; explore our Solar System; learn about light, colour and infrared; engineer their own space telescope; unearth the wonders of the Universe and much more. Flexible, easy-to-use and fully supported by a suite of teaching resources, the Deep Space Diary empowers non-specialist educators to teach STEM while engaging children through hands-on, personalised learning.
The Deep Space Diary was launched in Spring 2019 and 15,000 free copies were sent to UK schools, with priority given to those with a high percentage of free school meals/pupil premium. The Diary and all its teaching materials – including teaching notes, curriculum guides, suggested programme schedules and multimedia resources – are free to download. Published by Curved House Kids, the Deep Space Diary is the third book book in the Discovery Diary series, which uses visual and creative pedagogies to deliver complex STEM topics in an accessible way. Through this model, students are encouraged to imagine, question, research, visualise, analyse, problem solve and to ‘think like a scientist’. This unique approach is designed to empower every student to participate fully in STEM learning.
